IPR Disputes
In March of 1999, Chronimed Inc., a diagnostics firm in Minneapolis, sued Bayer,
seeking a declaration that certain Bayer patents were invalid and not
infringed by Chronimed's Diascreen(R) urine test strips. Bayer countersued
for patent infringement.
Bayer sued the Elan Corporation for infringement on US Patent No. 5,264,446,
for a 'composition that contains nifedipine crystals of a defined specific
surface area." The Judge ruled against Bayer, ordering it to "clearly and
unmistakably gave up claim coverage."
Other Disputes
Bayer conducted a study of Ciproxin on 650 people in England, despite dangers
apparent from preclinical research. The company did not inform the subjects,
at least one of whom died as a result. Many others received developed potntially
deadly diseases.
Public Relations
Described on the Bayer website as an "Image Campaign," this site includes TV ads,
the Bayer Song, and some other PR materials.
